IPoE vs PPPoE — What's the Difference?
When you sign up for NBN, your provider will either give you a username and password — or tell you that you don't need one at all. That comes down to the authentication method your router uses to connect to the ISP's network. There are two: IPoE and PPPoE.
How Each Method Works
IPoE (Internet Protocol over Ethernet) uses DHCP to get an IP address. The ISP identifies your router by its MAC address. No username, no password — plug in and it works.
PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) uses a login handshake. You enter the credentials your ISP provides (in your router's WAN settings, usually under "Internet Connection Type"), and your router authenticates every time it connects. If the credentials are wrong or the session times out, you have no internet until it re-authenticates.
Which One Is Better?
Neither is better. They are simply different authentication methods with no measurable difference in speed, latency, or data caps. The differences that matter:
- IPoE is simpler — no credentials to enter, works with almost any router out of the box, and there are fewer moving parts that can fail.
- PPPoE is more explicit — the login handshake means you know exactly when the connection is established, and you can disconnect/reconnect with a single command. Some providers also use it to enforce per-account policies.
- PPPoE adds one more thing to go wrong — a mistyped password, an expired session, or a firmware reset that wipes the credentials can leave you offline until you re-enter them.
For the typical household, IPoE is the lower-maintenance choice, but if your ISP only offers PPPoE you will never notice the difference in normal use.
Does It Affect Your Plan?
No. The authentication method has zero impact on speed, data, or price. It is purely a technical detail about how your router connects to the ISP. You should not choose (or avoid) a provider based on this field alone — pricing, CGNAT policy, and billing terms matter far more.
Do I Need to Configure Anything?
If your provider supplies a router, it arrives pre-configured. If you use your own router:
- IPoE: Set the WAN connection type to "Automatic Configuration" (DHCP). That's it.
- PPPoE: Set the WAN connection type to PPPoE and enter the username and password from your welcome email or account portal.
Most modern routers support both methods, so switching ISPs rarely forces a router change.

Does IPoE mean my MAC address is my "identity" on the internet?
Roughly, yes — the ISP ties your session to your router's MAC address for authentication purposes, but that identity is internal to the ISP's network. Other websites and services see your IP address, not your MAC address.
